[Sep. 10th, 2008|12:27 pm] |
This morning, I happened upon my wife's, my daughter's, and my own backpacks laid about and around our kitchen. The sight bid me to pause for a moment to reflect upon our family life thus far. August marked the anniversary of move into our new home. Such momentous occasions lead one to ponder on such things, I suppose. What really was laid before me were three separate lives. The youngest just learning the inklings of young adulthood, the next transitioning to her pursuit of higher education, and the last supporting all these efforts and, at the same time, turning his attention to more leisurely vocations to buffer the stress from his more mundane responsibility.
Three dissimilar lives around one dinner table. To survive in this manner as a cohesive family unit would seem impossible to the objective view. However, millions of people arrayed as such find a way to be together. The cares of the world may make your pack large. Distance may make your dinner table a figure of speech. But, it is worth the time to lay your packs down and go to the dinner table.

Got Velocifero for a Father's Day present (there's something profound on offer with that statement, if one cares to think about it). It's a very bubbly offering in comparison to previous offerings. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the new direction that started with Witching Hour. Maybe will post again once I've listened to the entire thing in one go. |

This list of password requirements was borne from some stricter requirements that we've seen as time has marched along. They're not too draconian. Maybe. :)

I'm settling in pretty well with my new employer close to UCF. My cubemates are both avid board game players, so I've been bit (again) by the board game bug. I've had to have my wrist slapped two times this past week by the wife for buying too much! |

On my way to the orientation for my new employer. The orientation is in San Antonio, so that means travel is the business of the day. Unlike my previous position, it doesn't require much of this. Probably this would be the only time I'd go anywhere on business. |

I usually come to Orlando Brewing when it just opens on the weekdays when I can. Today, I got to bring my youngest and my wife. We were the only folks there. Cool!

| Surveyage!!! |
[Mar. 7th, 2008|06:15 pm] |
E2: The Everything Test 2 There are many different types of tests on the internet today. Personality tests, purity tests, stereotype tests, political tests. But now, there is one test to rule them all. Traditionally, online tests would ask certain questions about your musical tastes or clothing for a stereotype, your experiences for a purity test, or deep questions for a personality test. We're turning that upside down - all the questions affect all the results, and we've got some innovative results too! Version 2 is leaner, meaner, and features a more mature and varied set of questions than the previous test. Enjoy! | Character Traits | | Analytical | 40% | | Artistic | 9% | | Driven | 60% | | Emotional | 50% | | Horny | 86% | | Independent | 0% | | Musical | 27% | | Optimistic | 100% | | Outgoing | 0% | | Political | 78% | | Religious | 73% | | Romantic | 100% | | Social | 50% | | | | Life Experience | | Criminality | 29% | | Intellectual | 75% | | Relationships | 33% | | Sexuality | 72% | | Travel | 34% | | Politics Your political views would best be described as Socialist, while philosophically you tend to think like a Liberal. | | Socioeconomic Your attitude toward life best associates you with Working Class. You make more than 87% of those who have taken this test, and 10% more than the U.S. average. | | You tend to think more like an artist than an engineer. | | Location-wise, you would probably be a good fit for the Suburbs. | TAKE THE TEST brought to you by thatsurveysite |

| Lesson that Nokia needs to learn. Step 1: Marketing |
[Mar. 4th, 2008|09:08 am] |
Nokia really and truly do need to let their marketing people loose on North America. If you look at the lines that Nokia has, they've got competition in the E series arena with the Blackberries, the Treos, and to a lesser degree all the "me too" Windows Mobile devices (HTC comes to mind).
In the N Series arena, the only real competitor is the iPhone... That's it. Seriously Nokia. Get on your horse and ride. There are phones a couple years older than the iPhone that outperform it. There's no excuse for Nokia not havin a slice of that pie. We enthusiasts can preach all we want, but we only have a span consisting of our peers. Nokia can touch the world if they wanted to.
The evening in Miami referenced in my previous posts showed me that Nokia has something that they can do in the US market. They've got a dedicated cadre of enthusiasts, developers, and simple end users that believe in the brand. However, the population as a whole don't associate Nokia with high end phones. The only thing that US end users know about Nokia is what the carriers offer. If I was to walk down to any carrier's outlet, all I would see are 3xxxs, 5xxxs, and 6xxxs. Not terrible phones, but nothing like the full power phones that Nokia releases. I don't count the N75 by Cingular. Don't get me started that one. That doesn't count. That thing is gimped beyond all belief by the custom firmware. I'll save that for a future post. |

| Evening with S60: A great time. |
[Feb. 28th, 2008|10:46 pm] |
That was a good time. I hope the Nokia folks learn that they really need marketing to push their products to the masses with success. The only thing that people know about Nokia is cheap free phones. They've got more than that.

| Evening with S60: Nokia Maps |
[Feb. 28th, 2008|09:06 pm] |
Jalmi Samminen is presenting the new version of the Nokia Maps service. It has all the features of Google Maps plus the ability to be guided on foot, city guides, and multiple waypoint support. If they add geocaching support, I'm sold.

Great turnout. They've started on the features of the new OS. S60 3rd edition feature pack 2 will have versatile active idle layouts (context sensitive layouts), active slideshow in Active idle, and a new arriving call pop (full screen caller id), easier to access multi-tasking, labeling for middle soft key, and prioritized connectivity support.
