This morning, I happened upon my wife's, my daughter's, and my own backpacks laid about and around our kitchen. The sight bid me to pause for a moment to reflect upon our family life thus far. August marked the anniversary of move into our new home. Such momentous occasions lead one to ponder on such things, I suppose. What really was laid before me were three separate lives. The youngest just learning the inklings of young adulthood, the next transitioning to her pursuit of higher education, and the last supporting all these efforts and, at the same time, turning his attention to more leisurely vocations to buffer the stress from his more mundane responsibility.

Three dissimilar lives around one dinner table. To survive in this manner as a cohesive family unit would seem impossible to the objective view. However, millions of people arrayed as such find a way to be together. The cares of the world may make your pack large. Distance may make your dinner table a figure of speech. But, it is worth the time to lay your packs down and go to the dinner table.

Wed 09/10/2008 06:50 09102008793

Lesson that Nokia needs to learn. Step 1: Marketing

Nokia really and truly do need to let their marketing people loose on North America. If you look at the lines that Nokia has, they've got competition in the E series arena with the Blackberries, the Treos, and to a lesser degree all the "me too" Windows Mobile devices (HTC comes to mind).

In the N Series arena, the only real competitor is the iPhone... That's it. Seriously Nokia. Get on your horse and ride. There are phones a couple years older than the iPhone that outperform it. There's no excuse for Nokia not havin a slice of that pie. We enthusiasts can preach all we want, but we only have a span consisting of our peers. Nokia can touch the world if they wanted to.

The evening in Miami referenced in my previous posts showed me that Nokia has something that they can do in the US market. They've got a dedicated cadre of enthusiasts, developers, and simple end users that believe in the brand. However, the population as a whole don't associate Nokia with high end phones. The only thing that US end users know about Nokia is what the carriers offer. If I was to walk down to any carrier's outlet, all I would see are 3xxxs, 5xxxs, and 6xxxs. Not terrible phones, but nothing like the full power phones that Nokia releases. I don't count the N75 by Cingular. Don't get me started that one. That doesn't count. That thing is gimped beyond all belief by the custom firmware. I'll save that for a future post.
